2/18 Get Strong, Thick, Heathly Hair

Posted on February 18, 2010 at 11:22 AM

Here's a question from one of my readers:

"I've noticed that I've been loosing alot of hair lately. It's becoming visibly thinner, and I'm afraid I'm going bald! Do you know of any products or home remedies that might help with this problem?"

If your hair is not thinning, don't stop reading.

Simply skip ahead to just under the included link for folica.com. You may have been blessed with great hair, but the solutions suggested below will make your hair stronger, healthier and more beautiful....

For those of you who DO have thinning hair...

First of all, as a professional, I have to refer you to a physician. There could be a hormonal or medical reason for your thinning hair.

If you have already been cleared by your doctor, you probably have 1 of 2 things to thank for your thinning locks, A vitamin Deficiency or Heredity.

There a million products out there in a million different price ranges that claim to solve these problems, but I have no experience with any of them. Below is a link to Folica.com where you can find a list of shampoos designed to treat hair loss, but I cannot recommend one over another.

Personally, I prefer to try natural home-made remedies. Especially when treating hair/skin/nails that is/are delicate, brittle, sensitive or damaged.

Here are a few home remedies I would try before purchasing any products that contain chemicals.

The main cause of female hair loss is Vitamin Deficiency, so what better way to  fix it than to restore the vitamins...right?

First, you should be taking a multi-vitamin or a hair, skin, and nail vitamin.

Second, use the following daily treatment to restore lipids to the hair. Lipids will not only strengthen the individual strands and thicken hair, but they also strengthen the hairs bond in the follicle. This conditions the hair you do have, and prevents you from loosing any more:

Add 2 TBS of Oat Flour (found at any grocery store) to your regular conditioner, mix well and use as usual.

Third, Use one of the followiing home-made treatments weekly:

If you lack protein in your diet or your hair is very brittle.

1. If you have short hair: beat one egg, and massage it into your scalp. Make sure to cover hair from root to tip.

If you have long hair: Use 2 eggs

Allow this mixture to sit on hair for 10 minutes

Rinse with cool water and shampoo/condition as usual.

Why this works:

Eggs contain Vitamin A, B, and D  which promote hair growth, as well as protein which adds strength to the strands you do have and makes them appear thicker.

If your hair is dull, limp, and lifeless

2. I know this sounds crazy, but have I ever steered you wrong before? Trust me this works! Cover your hair with honey, starting at the scalp, massaging it in, then saturating hair from root to tip.

Cover with an old towel and allow it to sit for at least 20-25 minutes

Rinse with warm water and shampoo/condition as usual.

Why this works:

Honey is pretty much the beauty cure-all. If you've read any of my "Kitchen Cabinet remedy" blogs, you know that honey is anti-septic and hydrating, which makes it great for your skin, but it also contains vitamins, nutrients, and anti-oxidants that make it a great strengthener and growth stimulator for your hair. AND it'll give your locks great shine and volume.

If your hair is dry OR if you use heat to style it. *this one's for me!*

3. Mash 1/2 an avocado and 1/2 a banana into paste, mix thoroughly, massage into scalp, and pull through to ends of hair.

Wrap in an old towel and allow to sit for 20-25 minutes.

rinse with cool water and shampoo/condition as usual.

Why this works:

Both Banana and Avocado contain vitamins A, B, and E which promote hair growth, as well as balance moisture production for dry hair. Potassium from the bananas helps to protect hair against excessive heat and other damage.

(Hint: Add some honey to the mixture for an extra boost)

Send your beauty questions to [email protected] and I'll answer them in my next blog.
